Pupils at Swanbourne House in an English class
Swanbourne House

English

At Swanbourne House, our English programme is aimed at nurturing a love of literature and language. By Year 8, pupils will have studied a wide range of poets, playwrights, and historical texts, from Beowulf to Shakespeare, and from John Agard to Dylan Thomas.

We encourage a passion for reading through weekly sessions that provide quiet time for students to immerse themselves in books. Supported by Accelerated Reader, we help recommend suitable and challenging texts for each student.

Our focus is on developing strong writing and communication skills, through both formal and creative writing tasks. Pupils also grow in confidence with written and oral presentations, using ICT alongside traditional handwriting to express their ideas. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar are taught thoroughly to meet and exceed curriculum standards.

Creative writing and constructive feedback are central to our teaching, ensuring every student reflects, improves, and progresses in their skills, with regular spelling tests to reinforce learning.
