Humanities

Pre-Senior Baccalureate

Geography, History and Religious Studies are taught within our Humanities Department, with specialist teaching from Year 5. Knowledge and key skills are learnt in context through varied and exciting projects the pupils undertake each term. The study of Humanities provokes pupils to ask questions about their relationship with the environment, local area and with other cultures and faiths around the globe.

Geography

Geography at Swanbourne House encourages pupils to explore and understand the world around them. Through practical enquiry and engaging topics, children investigate the relationships between people, places and environments, developing a sense of curiosity about how our planet works.

Pupils study physical and human geography. Topics include rivers and coasts, weather and climate, ecosystems, urbanisation, migration and sustainability. Lessons combine maps, data and digital resources with practical fieldwork, giving pupils the chance to test ideas and experience geography first-hand.

Pupils take part in local field trips as well as larger excursions, such as to Dorset and Iceland, giving them the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings.

History

From the local history of Swanbourne, to the Middle Ages and Vikings, to the Tudors, Victorians and World Wars, pupils study British and world history in depth. They learn to evaluate evidence, interpret different viewpoints, and understand change over time.

Learning extends beyond the classroom with visits to historic sites and museums, including trips to Warwick Castle, Bletchley Park and a History of Witchcraft tour in London, helping pupils connect directly with the past.

Re-enactments, including our annual Trench-digging workshops, and themed events (our summer school water fight is always based on a historic battle!), enrich the curriculum, making history engaging and memorable.

Religious Studies (RS)

RS at Swanbourne House encourages pupils to explore life’s big questions while developing respect and understanding for different cultures and beliefs. Lessons are engaging, discussion-based and designed to nurture curiosity, empathy and moral awareness.

Pupils study the major world religions – including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism – alongside ethical and philosophical questions. They learn about traditions, festivals and teachings, while reflecting on how faith influences communities across the world.

Debate and reflection are central to RS lessons. Pupils explore moral and ethical dilemmas from fairness and justice to environmental responsibility.
