Maths at Swanbourne House

At Swanbourne House, mathematics is hands-on, practical and inspiring. Our spiral curriculum builds confidence by returning to key skills at increasing levels of depth, while applying maths to real-life contexts  –  from designing board games to planning trips.

Specialist Teaching

From Year 5 onwards, pupils are taught by specialist maths teachers in dedicated classrooms. Lessons focus on problem-solving, reasoning and creativity, encouraging children to explore different solutions, explain their thinking and develop resilience.

Broad Skills and Strong Foundations

Pupils cover the full range of topics — including arithmetic, fractions, algebra, geometry and statistics — with an emphasis on making connections and applying knowledge in new situations. A mix of practical tools, visual models and abstract methods ensures every child builds strong, lasting foundations.

Innovation and Technology

Technology is woven into our teaching, with pupils using iPads and interactive apps to explore problems and share their learning. Our department includes a Microsoft and Apple Distinguished Educator, reflecting our innovative use of digital tools to enhance understanding.
